in a few words the plot is:
art school in italy. crazy protagonist who discovers dead ppl. conspiracy. professors sharing a secret.
so i like european cinema. so i like horror/thriller. so i like photography. so i like conspiracies. perfect by the sound of it.
also, so this is one of those movies SO HORRIBLE THAT U NEED TO WATCH TO BELIEVE IT WAS EVER MADE.
u know it s not a good sign when u sit infront of ur screen n u talk far more than the actors in the film do.
to begin with it seems this school is consisting of as many professors as students itself n all of the bunch which mounts up to 30 ppl at most is hosted in an enormous vast old building that is also surrounded by this cave, the Well of Death, n some acres of woods in the middle of nowhere. ah yes n it is international too ofc needless to say. in this school ppl r amazingly inspired analog artists who wander in constant darkness because obviously the head mistress is pretty skint or too stingy to pay for the electricity bill ever. hence not once is a lamp lit throughout the whole film phenomenon adding some difficulty to the telling apart of the mad old professors crawling in n out of labs n projection rooms.
naturally n well expected the school is also haunted n the traumatized lead character who is also naturally n well expected the most genius art photographer of the whole gifted lot -he is actually so genius that he mysteriously n magically manages throughout this well thought film to use a lubitel box camera, a praktica n a polaroid land camera in nearly complete darkness without one flashcube or any sort of flash while his images maintain the brightness n focus of studio photography- is the only one to see the ghost that leads him n his somewhat moronic n displaced girlfriend to an old chest that contains this amazing torture device or what it is (they dont know yet).
all of a sudden everyone hates him n the professors r so upset but ofc in the epic library of the epic wonderschool the protagonist n his girlfriend discover the legendary "thanatoscope"book. then they discover how a movie about it was made by the owner of the school but the girl got accidentally killed n bla bla n obviously someone is killing ppl with this "thanatosthg device" that severs ur eyes from the head n then instead of the negative u wisely develop the retina n there u have your award winning picture.
so as the corpses begin piling up along with the questions of why you are subjecting yourself to the horrors of watching this the mystery is solved: the professors want to continue the work of the inventor of the thanatoscope. they want to take a picture of death through death. that meaning yes a picture of the moment someone dies as depicted on the retina of someone also dying.
not meaning to spoil this once in a lifetime experience, the breathtaking leading couple r set for the final experiment when ofc they r being saved by good old professor man willing to sacrifice himself n put an end to this frenzy, also killing the evil student girl who s been using the device approved by the teaching staff.
all in all speechless. the artiness n uniqueness n devotion to the art of being arty in terms of artistic photography of the students in the film blew me away. the incredibly quick smart suggestive n surprising plot also blew me away. the photography n cinematography of zero perspective n cropped scenes swept me off my feet. as the end credits finally made their life saving appearance i was left standing there (blown away n windswept) feeling pretty angry anyone had spent money on producing such an elusive masterpiece of utterly pointless crap.
note: to mention the bruno super photographer of super ideas looks like my neighbour only much worse too, it is possible. plus he kisses the camel resembling girlfriend who photographs walls instead of roofs or anythg at the most inappropriate moments, like after they happily find out after some death or something of the sort...
it felt as if the thanatoscoping head torture device was being adjusted to my own head tearing at my optical nerve and any brain activity nerves available, for whole 98 minutes.
